A classic goldsmith education lies at the bottom of my artistic work. My passion for craftsmanship survived while I challenge the roles and prospects of jewelry, widen its boundaries towards sculpture and installation. I work in various materials provided by objects found at garbage places, flea markets, cheap shops or discarded in nature; objects suggesting visualizations of perceptions and associations. It is a playful exploration of the formability of unknown materials in combination with familiar metals.
Philipp Spillmann, born in 1977, completed a classical goldsmith apprenticeship including studies at Schule für Gestaltung in Zürich, Switzerland. He moved to Norway in 2001 and became a member of the Norwegian Association of Arts & Crafts in 2011. He has participated in national and international exhibitions focusing on art jewelry and objects, and he has recently developed art for public spaces. His work is part of the permanent collections of the Art Museum of Bergen – KODE, the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo and the North Norwegian Art Museum in Tromsø, Norway.
