Kunstnerhuset as it stands today was inaugurated in the winter of 1953, but its history starts a couple of decades earlier with Ms. Størmer Olsen’s “Kunstnerhus”. Alfhild Størmer Olsen was a well-travelled and hospitable merchant’s daughter, who took in guests into her house in Klippenborg. Several Swedish artists visited her, eventually also Anna Boberg, who became the founder of Kunstnerhuset Lofoten. Anna Boberg (1864 – 1953) was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Her husband, Ferdinand Boberg, was one of the architects involved in the construction of Kiruna city. From Kiruna, Mr. and Mrs. Boberg travelled to Lofoten. She eventually fell so in love with the surroundings that she had an artist studio built on Svinøya in Svolvær (ca. 1910).
